MSDs in figures by sector
In France in 2019, there were approximately 50,000 new cases of MSDs recognised as occupational diseases. However, this figure does not take into account unrecognised MSDs. They can affect all occupational sectors, but some are more at risk than others because of the tasks and physical activities they involve. According to the latest available data from the CNAM for 2019, here are some key figures for the occupational sectors most affected by MSDs in France:
1. Healthcare activities: workers in the healthcare sector, such as nurses, care assistants and physiotherapists, are particularly exposed to MSDs due to repetitive movements, patient handling and prolonged working positions. They account for 45.7% of all MSD cases.
2. Manufacturing industry: workers in manufacturing industry, such as production line workers, are exposed to repetitive tasks, awkward postures and handling of heavy loads. It accounts for 14.9% of all MSD cases.
3. The transport and logistics sector: truck drivers, handlers and warehouse workers are exposed to MSD risks related to driving vehicles, handling loads and prolonged postures. It represents 8.2% of all MSD cases.
4. The construction sector: Construction workers are exposed to MSD hazards related to repetitive movements, handling heavy loads, using vibrating tools and prolonged postures. It accounts for 7.1% of all MSD cases.
5. The restaurant and hotel sector: workers in the restaurant and hotel sector are exposed to MSD risks related to prolonged postures, handling of loads and repetitive movements. It accounts for 6.3% of all MSD cases.
